Bradford University Judo Club win Gold, Silver and Bronze in Kyu grad compsGold for Kostas, Silver for Donald and Bronze for Matt, so every colour won at the Goole championships.

Everyone stepped up and went beyond what was expected. Kostas went up a weight category (loose weight for next week) and beat people 30kg heavier. Donald kept losing until he was told to win, and what did he do, win. Matt is new to Judo and was solid, he just needs to be taught more by his coach he says.

Goole Senior Open Arther Jouy, John Barton & Rhea Brown at Goole Senior Open In the last tournament of the year for Bradford University Judo Club we managed to gain success from both competitors that entered. Arthur Jouy managed to take away the gold medal in the <73kg Kyu grade category and Rhea Brown achieve a bronze medal in the combined <63kg, <70kg & <78kg. Rhea gave away over 10kg to some players and still managed to hold her own.

Rhea Brown takes bronze medal @ BUCS 2014BUCS (British Universities and College Sport) is the highlight event on the university sports calendar and Team Bradford done really well competing at this event for the very first time. Rhea Brown achieve a Bronze Medal in the -63kg Kyu grade category.  Nikolajs Nikolajevs got 10 more point towards his black belt competing in the -66kg Dan grade category and Yannis Varvounis fought amazing well against some very high grade competitors in his first Dan grade championship event at -81kg.

Thanks also to Lisa and Luca for coming along to support those competing, much appreciated!

There were over 480 competitors, many of a national and international standard, there were even some Olympians who are studying in the UK that were taking part, so the results achieved are pretty incredible. Go TEAM BRADFORD!!

24th November London University & College Senior Open Judo Team Bradford @ London University & College Senior Open 2013 CompetitionJudo Team Bradford entered 6 players to compete at the London University & College Senior Open 2013 on Sunday 24th November. An outstanding result was achived with Katie Lomas won silver in the +70kg novice to 3rd Kyu (green belt) category, Rhea Brown won gold in the -63kg novice to 3rd Kyu category and Robert Demidov won gold in the -90kg novice to 3rd Kyu category.

The senior men Nikolajs Nikolajevs, Yannis Varvounis & Luca Parisi where up against it in the high grade senior competition competing again top class athletes from all over the world and although they did not medal, they gave a really great effort and performance. Luca the club president for example was only eliminated from his final contest in the last 1 second of his 5 min contest where up until that point he was ahead, he was so unlucky, but that’s Judo.

2nd November Sheffield Kyu Grade Nikolajs Nikolajevs and Ioannis Varvounis @ Sheffied Kyu Grade Competition Incredible result for Team Bradford at Sheffield Kyu Grade Competition. Both Nikolajs Nikolajevs and Yannis Varvounis achieved gold medals in their respective categories of -66kg 1st Kyu (Brown belt) and -90kg 2nd Kyu (Blue belts) and below respectively.

Both players were also combined with other groups where their opponents where either more experienced and/or of a higher weight category, and in both case Nik & Yannis also managed to beat a considerable number of these opponents.

Both Nik and Yannins showed some amazing Judo techniques throughout the competition. Coaches from other universities commented on there performance saying they both deserved medals, not only for winning but also for best throws of the day. A well-deserved result!!!

27th October North Of England U21 Luca Parisi @ U21 North of England Championships Luca Parisi represented Bradford University Judo Club at the Richard Dunne Sport centre. Luca entered the competition with 2 broken toes and gave a determined effort despite the pain and the inability to put any pressure on his foot.  Quite correctly after two contests he made the decision to withdraw, which is a lesson we should all learn, your health as an individual always comes first.

It was also very nice to see so many supporters Bradford University Judo Club turn up to watch and cheer Luca on in his efforts, a great day was had by everyone.
